Creating a supportive classroom environment for all students

Creating a community of learners begins on day one. For trans* students, the first days of school may cause anxiety. Few teachers know ahead of time that a trans* student may use a name different from the one listed on class rosters and grading materials. Additionally, trans* students frequently find themselves explaining to their teachers the pronouns they use. These are experiences and anxieties unfamiliar to cisgender students and adults.

Below are opportunities for teachers to help all students feel welcomed and supported.

Classroom Management
  • On the first day of school, teachers should take attendance by reading each student's last name and asking each to respond with their preferred first name.
  • When organizing students for group activities, avoid grouping students based on gender. Alternatives include asking students to count-off, determining groups ahead of time based on strengths, birthday, or shirt color.
  • Use student names, or gender neutral terms,  instead of referring to an individual or group of students based on perceived gender identity.

Being Supportive
Educators are allies and often want to know what they can do to support students.  Here are some guidelines for talking to trans* students:
  • Let the student come to you. Generally, you should not approach a student to talk about their perceived trans* identity.
  • Be honest. Make it clear that you don't know much about young trans* people. Most times, trans* students already know this and would love to educate someone.
  • Have a discussion about their personal safety at school. Make sure that they have somewhere safe to go if they are being harassed.
  • Never ask students questions such as, "Have you had surgery?" or "Do you want to have surgery?" While you may be curious, you have to take a step back and realize what you're really asking is what kind of genitalia your student has.
